A LOLER thorough examination must be completed on all lifting equipment to comply with LOLER. The LOLER definition of Lifting equipment includes any equipment used at work for lifting or lowering loads, including attachments used for anchoring, fixing or supporting it.

The LOLER Regulations cover a wide range of equipment including, cranes, fork-lift trucks, lifts, hoists, mobile elevating work platforms, and vehicle inspection platform hoists. The definition also includes lifting accessories such as chains, slings, eye bolts etc.


If you own, hire or come into the posession of, or have enter your site, works or premises any of the following items:

Slings made from rope, chain, steel wire, flat webbing or any other man made fibre.

Shackles and eyebolts/eyenuts made from steel either bright or dull.

Chain blocks, lever operated hoists, beam clamps, beam trollies.

Hydraulics  jacks, rams, tirfors,

Overhead cranes,Gantries, Mobile cranes, Tower cranes ,lorry mounted cranes any other Cranes

Material lifts, Electric hoists,

Pallet trucks, roll over/tipping skips, fork trucks, , container lifts, spreader beams, lifting frames, lifting cages, man riding cages.

Recovery winches, man riding winches, safety harnesses, lanyards of any description, tripods, , man anchorages (portable and fixed), snatch blocks, sheave blocks,

Or any work equipment to raise, lower, or suspend a load including the anchorage point/structure.

Items will need to have a current in date certificate stating weather it is “SAFE” or “NOT SAFE TO USE” before it is used for either the first time – referred to as a birth certificate – or its continued safe use if not brand new.
