Assault Course Refurbishment

Courses Kept Serviceable & Obstacles Replaced Properly

An assault course wears in ways that are easy to miss. For example, a frame that has stood for 15 years may look much as it always did, while the netting has lost strength to ultraviolet, the ropes have hardened, and the fixings have worked loose after thousands of repetitions. Nothing announces itself as an issue until something gives way under somebody.

At SWL, we refurbish assault courses and supply replacement and bespoke obstacles for military units, cadet organisations, schools and training providers across the UK. Our aim is to repair and renew worn obstacles, fixtures, and fittings to extend a course’s life rather than replacing it wholesale. Rope and netting is our own trade, which is why scramble nets and climbing ropes make up so much of the work.

Assault course work we carry out:

  • Refurbishment of worn obstacles, fixtures and fittings
  • Custom sized scramble nets and replacement netting
  • Climbing ropes with attachment arrangements to suit the structure
  • Balance beam obstacles supplied and replaced
  • Bespoke obstacles manufactured to drawings and training objectives
  • Condition assessments, installation and planned repairs

Is Your Course Due A Refurbishment?

Tell us what the course has on it and what condition it is in, and we will work out what needs replacing and what can be repaired.

Assault Course Refurbishment & Obstacle Supply Explained

Course Refurbishment

Refurbishment starts with what you can save. Frames and structures often remain sound long after the components hanging off them have gone, so repairing and renewing worn obstacles, fixtures and fittings usually extends a course’s service life for a fraction of the cost of rebuilding it.

We replace what needs replacing, repair what needs repairing, and tell you which is which before we price any work.

Netting degrades under ultraviolet and abrasion, ropes harden and lose their grip, timber weathers and splits at the fixings, and the fittings holding everything to the structure loosen under repeated shock loading. All of it is predictable, which is why a refurbishment addresses the whole system rather than replacing whichever obstacle happens to look worst.

Scramble Nets

A scramble net is made to the frame, not the frame to the net. That’s why we supply custom-sized nets for existing structures and new obstacle designs, cut and finished to the dimensions and mesh the obstacle needs, along with replacement netting for frames that are otherwise sound.

Netting is where our rope work earns its place, since specification, construction and termination are the same disciplines we apply to lifting slings and fibre rope assemblies. Attachment matters as much as the net itself, because a net is only as secure as the points holding it to the frame, and those get specified against the structure they fix to.

Climbing Ropes & Balance Beam Obstacles

Climbing ropes come with attachment arrangements suited to the supporting structure and intended use, which is the part most often got wrong. The rope itself is straightforward. The anchorage above it, and whether it suits the beam, gantry or frame it hangs from, decides whether the obstacle is safe, so it is specified rather than assumed.

Balance beam obstacles are supplied and replaced to suit existing course layouts and training requirements, sized and set to the heights the programme uses. Where a beam sits within a wider run of obstacles, it’s matched to what stands on either side rather than fitted in isolation.

Bespoke Obstacle Manufacture

When a course needs something that isn’t a standard obstacle, we manufacture and supply to agreed drawings, dimensions, and training objectives. That covers replacements for obstacles whose original supplier has long since gone, alterations to suit changes in the training programme, and one-off builds designed around a specific objective.

Materials are selected for outdoor exposure, repeated use, and the maintenance a site can realistically provide, because an obstacle needing attention every month will not get it. Steel, timber, rope and netting each have their place, and the specification follows the duty rather than the catalogue.

Installation, Assessment & Ongoing Support

Installation includes removing damaged components and fitting replacement obstacles and accessories as one job, so no course is left partially stripped. Where obstacles fix into existing structures or foundations, we can prove those fixings by pull testing before the obstacle is used, and where obstacles carry people at height, the same discipline behind our height safety systems applies directly.

Beyond the work itself, condition assessments and planned repairs keep a course serviceable, rather than letting it deteriorate between major refurbishments. We schedule refurbishment and deliveries around site access and training programmes, because a course out of action during a training cycle is a bigger problem than the repair.

Our Process

From Assessment To Serviceable Course

  1. 01

    Assess The Course

We look at what is there, what is worn and what is sound, then set out what needs replacing against what can be repaired.

  2. 02

    Specify & Quote

Obstacles, nets and ropes are specified against the structures they fix to and the training the course supports.

  3. 03

    Manufacture & Supply

Nets are cut to size, ropes are made up with the right attachments, and bespoke obstacles are built to the agreed drawings.

  4. 04

    Install & Support

Damaged components are removed and replacements fitted, with condition assessments and planned repairs to follow.

Our Assault Course FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Who do you supply assault course obstacles to?

Military units, cadet organisations, schools and training providers across the United Kingdom. The work involves course refurbishment and obstacle supply, not events or venue hire.

Can you refurbish an existing course rather than replace it?

Usually, and it’s normally the right answer. Frames and structures often remain sound long after the netting, ropes and fittings have worn out, so renewing those components extends the course’s life for far less than a rebuild.

Do you make scramble nets to size?

Yes. Nets are made to the frame rather than the other way round, cut and finished to the dimensions and mesh the obstacle needs, with replacement netting available for frames that are otherwise sound.

Can you supply climbing ropes with the fixings?

Yes, and the attachment arrangement is the important part. Ropes are supplied with fixings specified against the supporting structure and the intended use, rather than left to whatever is already up there.

Can you manufacture a bespoke obstacle?

Yes. We manufacture to agreed drawings, dimensions and training objectives, including replacements for obstacles whose original supplier no longer exists.

Do you install as well as supply?

Yes. We remove damaged components and fit replacements in one job, so the course isn’t left partially stripped between visits.

How do we know when a course needs refurbishing?

Condition assessments identify what is worn before it fails, which matters because the components that go first, netting, rope and fixings, degrade in ways that are hard to see from the ground.

Can the work fit around our training programme?

Yes. We schedule refurbishment and deliveries around site access and training, since a course out of action during a training cycle causes more disruption than the repair itself.
