GSE Equipment Specialists

Keep Your Ground Support Equipment Airworthy On The Ground

In aviation, ground support equipment counts as lifting equipment the moment it’s used to raise, lower, support or position aircraft, components or loads, which puts it squarely under LOLER.

Powered or manual makes no difference.

A tripod jack under an airframe, an axle jack at the wheel, a wing jack carrying a gear swing, an engine hoist or a hydraulic lifting table all carry the same legal duty of thorough examination.

We examine and test aviation GSE across the UK, at MRO facilities, hangars and airfields, working around maintenance schedules rather than through them. This is familiar territory for SWL. Our group has manufactured load cell jacking systems for stress jacking 747 aircraft, so the engineers examining your equipment understand what it does and what happens when it fails. Every examination is documented and certified, with defective equipment identified immediately so it never sits under an airframe.

Aviation GSE we inspect and test:

  • Tripod jacks, axle jacks and wing and body jacks
  • Shoring equipment used during heavy maintenance
  • Engine hoists, cranes, engine stands and bootstrap kits
  • Hydraulic lifting tables for APU, avionics and component handling
  • Thorough examination every 6 or 12 months under LOLER
  • Immediate defect reporting and removal from service

Aviation GSE Inspection & Testing, Explained

What Counts As Lifting Equipment in Aviation

Any GSE used to raise, lower, support, or position aircraft, components, or loads is lifting equipment under the regulations, whether powered or manual.

In practice, that spans the entire maintenance operation, including the tripod jacks under the airframe, the axle jacks at the wheels, the wing and body jacks supporting a gear swing, and the shoring holding everything steady while the structure is opened up.

It extends to the component side too. Engine hoists and cranes that remove and install engines, the stands that support them during transport and maintenance, bootstrap kits that lift an engine off the aircraft’s own structure, and the hydraulic lifting tables that handle APUs, avionics, and components all fall within the duty.

If a failure could drop an aircraft, an engine, or a person, it needs to be examined.

LOLER Requirements For GSE

GSE must undergo thorough examination every 6 or 12 months, depending on the equipment type, carried out by a competent person, exactly as our LOLER inspection service provides across every other industry. Aviation adds its own pressure to the schedule, because a jack that misses its examination date grounds itself, and anything sitting on it stops moving too.

Defects must be reported immediately and the equipment taken out of service, and that is precisely how we work. Any defect found is categorised on the spot, reported to you straight away, and the item is withdrawn before it can be used again. Nothing ambiguous is left under an aircraft.

Testing Aircraft Jacks & Lifting Equipment

Where an examination calls for it, or after repair, modification or an incident, GSE is proof load tested to confirm its capacity. Jacks are proven under controlled load with calibrated measurements, hoists and cranes are tested through their full working range, and hydraulic systems are checked for creep and drift that quietly turn a rated capacity into a hoped-for one. The methods follow our wider proof load testing service and are applied with an understanding of how aviation equipment is actually used.

Our group’s aviation pedigree runs deeper than inspection. We have designed and manufactured complete load cell jacking sets that enable the stress jacking of 747 aircraft, built to strict time and budget constraints, with calibration traceable to national standards. When your jacks are examined by SWL, they are examined by the people who build and test this equipment.

Aviation Jack Testing

Working Around Aircraft Maintenance

Aircraft maintenance runs to unforgiving schedules, and downtime on the equipment that supports it multiplies quickly. We examine and test at your facility, hangar or airfield, scheduling around checks and turnarounds so the examination happens while the equipment would be idle anyway, and grouping assets so a single visit covers as much of the fleet as possible.

Every examination and test is documented and certified, giving you the records that quality systems, auditors and insurers expect, with next due dates tracked so a lapsed certificate never takes a serviceable jack out of the game. Calibration on our own test equipment is traceable to national standards, which means the figures behind your certificates stand up wherever they are scrutinised.

Our Process

From Hangar Floor to Certificate

  1. 01

    Schedule The Visit

Tell us what GSE you hold and when it works. We will plan the examination around your maintenance programme, not against it.

  2. 02

    Examine & Test

Each item is thoroughly examined by a competent person, with proof load testing carried out where the examination or its history requires it.

  3. 03

    Report Defects Immediately

Any defect is categorised and reported on the spot, and the equipment comes out of service before it can be used again.

  4. 04

    Certify & Track

Certification is issued for every item, with next due dates logged so the fleet never drifts out of compliance.

Why Choose SWL

Aviation Lifting Is In Our History

We Build This Equipment

Our group has manufactured load cell jacking systems for stress jacking 747 aircrafts, so your GSE is examined by people who know it from the inside.

LOLER Without The Gaps

Thorough examination every 6 or 12 months, defects reported immediately, and equipment withdrawn before it can be used unsafely.

Scheduled Around Aircraft

Examinations planned around checks and turnarounds, so compliance never becomes the thing holding the hangar up.

Calibrated & Traceable

Test equipment calibrated traceably to national standards, behind certificates that satisfy quality systems and auditors.

Jacks To Hoists To Stands

One team examines the full GSE inventory, from tripod jacks and shoring to engine hoists, stands and lifting tables.

Proven With Airlines

Aviation operators and MRO facilities already trust SWL with their lifting compliance, and their aircraft sit on the results.

Our Aviation GSE FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Does LOLER apply to aviation ground support equipment?

Yes. Any GSE used to raise, lower, support, or position aircraft, components, or loads is lifting equipment under LOLER, whether powered or manual, and must undergo a thorough examination by a competent person at the required intervals.

How often must GSE be examined?

Every 6 or 12 months, depending on the equipment type, with re-examination also required after repair, modification or any event that could affect the equipment’s safety.

What aviation equipment do you inspect?

Tripod jacks, axle jacks, wing and body jacks, shoring equipment, engine hoists and cranes, engine stands, bootstrap kits and hydraulic lifting tables, along with the loose lifting gear that works around them.

What happens if a jack fails its examination?

The defect is reported to you immediately and the equipment is taken out of service on the spot. We categorise the fault so you know whether it is repairable, and nothing returns to use until it has been put right and re-examined.

Can you test GSE as well as examine it?

Yes. Where an examination requires it, or after repair or incident, we proof load test jacks, hoists and lifting equipment under calibrated measurement to confirm their capacity.

Do you work at our facility or yours?

Yours. Our engineers examine and test at MRO facilities, hangars, and airfields across the United Kingdom, with visits scheduled around your maintenance programme.

What experience does SWL have in aviation?

Beyond inspecting and testing GSE, our group has designed and manufactured complete load cell jacking systems enabling the stress jacking of 747 aircraft, with calibration traceable to national standards.
