At SWL, we assemble grade 8 and grade 10 chain slings in our own workshops to BS EN 818-4:1997, in single, two, three, and four-leg configurations, from 6mm up to 32mm, and with capacities up to 85 tonnes on a four-leg assembly.

Because the slings are mechanically assembled in-house, most can be made up the same day and supplied to your exact requirements. Every assembly comes with a comprehensive range of fittings and hooks to suit the application, full certification, and traceable records, so the compliance paperwork is in place the day it arrives.

Every chain sling we assemble is built to BS EN 818-4:1997 and conforms to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. We work in both grade 8 and grade 10, with grade 10 carrying around 25% more load than grade 8 of the same size. This often lets you drop to a smaller chain diameter for the same working load limit, making the sling lighter and easier to handle. Grade 10 is also slightly harder than grade 8, which adds toughness and extends service life.

Every assembly is individually marked and supplied with its certificate of conformity and traceable records, so it goes straight into your compliance file. Chain slings are lifting accessories under LOLER, which means thorough examination at the required intervals, and we can carry that out alongside the supply.

Working load limits depend on the number of legs and the angle at which they are used, so the right configuration matters as much as the grade.

What is the difference between grade 8 and grade 10 chain slings?

A grade 10 chain carries around 25% more load than a grade 8 chain of the same diameter. That extra capacity often means you can use a smaller, lighter chain with the same working load limit, making it easier to handle. Grade 10 is also slightly harder, giving better toughness and a longer service life. Grade 8 remains a cost-effective choice for general lifting.

In most cases, yes. Because the slings are mechanically assembled in our own workshops, we can make up to your specification quickly and supply them with full certification. We give a firm timeframe at the point of quoting.

Yes. We supply stainless steel chain systems for corrosive and washdown environments, including pump lifting chains for submersible pump retrieval. We also make up endless chain slings for choke and basket lifting.

Do you supply other sling types as well?
