Planned Crane Maintenance

Serviced Cranes Fail Less & Last Longer

A crane that stops takes the work beneath it down too, and nearly every breakdown announces itself first as a worn contactor, a stretching rope or a brake drifting out of adjustment. Our preventive crane maintenance is designed to catch those signals while they are still a service issue rather than a stoppage, and our dedicated crane division offers comprehensive service for all types and manufacturers of cranes and powered lifting equipment.

At SWL, we offer service and breakdown contracts tailored to the customer’s requirements, based on both the equipment’s usage and age, because a crane running three shifts in a foundry does not need the same attention as a jib lifting twice a week. Contract customers are covered by a call-out service in the event of a breakdown, and because we appreciate the impact a stopped crane has on your business, we aim to react to your call within 2 hours.

Our crane maintenance service covers:

  • Overhead travelling cranes, gantries and semi-gantries
  • Swing jibs, runway beams and light crane systems
  • All makes and manufacturers, powered and manual
  • Service intervals matched to usage and equipment age
  • Breakdown call out with a 2-hour response target for contract customers
  • Modernisation and upgrade advice from experienced engineers

Put Your Cranes On A Maintenance Contract

Tell us what cranes you run and how hard they work, and we will build a service and breakdown contract around them.

Crane Maintenance, Servicing & Modernisation

Preventative Maintenance Contracts

We build each contract around your equipment’s usage and age, setting service visits at the frequency the duty genuinely demands, and each visit systematically works through the crane. This includes checking the hoist, brakes, ropes or chains, controls, limit switches, structure and runway, with wear measured rather than eyeballed.

Adjustments and minor repairs are completed during the visit wherever the engineer’s kit allows, and anything larger is reported with a price before the work goes ahead. The record of every visit builds into a service history that supports the crane’s LOLER thorough examinations and tells you, over time, when a crane is heading toward modernisation rather than another repair.

Crane Servicing

Crane Servicing For Every Make

Crane fleets are rarely one brand, and tying each machine to its own manufacturer for servicing multiplies contracts, visits and invoices. Our engineers service all types and manufacturers of cranes and powered lifting equipment, from current models to machines whose makers disappeared decades ago, sourcing parts across the market rather than from a single catalogue.

That independence matters most on older cranes, where the judgement call between repairing, reconditioning and replacing needs an engineer with no stake in selling you a new machine. We keep serviceable cranes in service, and we say plainly when one has reached the point where the money spent on it stops coming back.

Swing Jib Service

Breakdown Cover For Contract Customers

Maintenance shrinks breakdowns, but nothing eliminates them, and when a crane stops, the cost runs by the hour. For our maintenance contract customers, we operate a call-out service with a 2-hour response target, because we understand the importance of the crane to your operation and the impact its failure has on everything scheduled around it.

The engineer who attends carries common failure parts, and under the contract, we already know your crane’s history, which is often the difference between a crane repair on the first visit and a second trip for parts.

Crane Maintenance & Servicing

Modernisation & Upgrades

With a wealth of experience and technical knowledge, our team offers advice and solutions to upgrade existing equipment, from new hoists, controls, and radio systems on a structurally sound crane to variable-speed drives that take the shock loading out of every lift. Modernisation often buys a decade of service for a fraction of the cost of a new installation.

Where the survey says the structure or the duty has genuinely outgrown the crane, the conversation moves to installing a new crane, and if you are interested in a no-obligation site survey for swing jibs, gantry cranes or runway beams, we are happy to look and tell you which side of that line your equipment sits on.

Our Process

From Survey To Scheduled Service

  1. 01

    Survey The Fleet

We assess each crane, its usage and its age, and recommend the service frequency the duty genuinely needs.

  2. 02

    Agree The Contract

Service and breakdown cover are shaped to your requirements, with costs clear before anything is signed.

  3. 03

    Service On Schedule

Engineers work through each crane systematically at every visit, completing adjustments and minor repairs on the spot.

  4. 04

    Report & Plan Ahead

Every visit is documented, larger work is quoted before it proceeds, and the service history builds toward smart long term decisions.

Why Choose SWL

A Dedicated Crane Division Behind Every Visit

2-Hour Breakdown Response

Contract customers get a call out service with a 2-hour response target, because a stopped crane cannot wait until Thursday.

Every Make & Age

All types and manufacturers serviced by one team, from this year's models to cranes that have outlived their makers.

Contracts That Fit The Duty

Service frequency set by usage and equipment age, so light users are not overserviced and hard workers are not neglected.

Fixed On The First Visit

Engineers arrive with the common parts and the crane's history, which keeps return trips the exception.

Honest Modernisation Advice

Upgrade, recondition or replace, the recommendation follows the survey, not the sales target.

Maintenance Meets Compliance

Service records support LOLER examinations, and one supplier keeps the crane both working and certified.

Our Crane Maintenance FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a crane be serviced?

It depends on usage, age and environment, which is why our contracts set the interval per crane rather than per calendar. A crane on continuous production duty requires far more frequent attention than a jib used occasionally, and we recommend the frequency of attention after surveying the equipment.

Do you service cranes from any manufacturer?

Yes. Our engineers maintain and service all types and manufacturers of cranes and powered lifting equipment, including machines whose original maker no longer exists.

What does a service visit include?

A systematic check of the hoist, brakes, ropes or chains, controls, limit switches, structure and runway, with wear measured, adjustments made during the visit, and any larger work reported and priced before it proceeds.

How quickly do you respond to a crane breakdown?

For maintenance contract customers, we operate a call-out service and aim to react to your call within 2 hours, with the attending engineer carrying common failure parts and your crane’s service history.

Is crane servicing the same as a LOLER examination?

No, and a crane needs both. Servicing keeps the crane in good working order, while the LOLER thorough examination is the statutory check by a competent person. We provide the two together so one supplier covers working order and compliance.

Can you upgrade an older crane instead of replacing it?

Frequently, yes. New hoists, controls, radio systems, and variable-speed drives can modernise a structurally sound crane for a fraction of the replacement cost, and we will survey yours without obligation and tell you honestly which route makes sense.

Which areas do you cover?

We maintain and service cranes across the United Kingdom, from single machines to multi-site fleets.
