Crane Repair Specialists

When The Crane Stops, The Clock Starts

A broken crane rarely breaks alone. Production queues behind it, deliveries slip, and every hour it hangs dead over the bay costs more than the repair will. Our dedicated crane division repairs all types and makes of cranes and powered lifting equipment, from hoist and brake failures to control faults, rope and chain replacement, and structural damage caused by shock loads.

Diagnosis happens on-site, and repairs are completed immediately or as soon as possible if specialist parts need to be ordered or reverse-engineered, with parts sourced from across the market rather than from a single manufacturer’s shelf; this also reduces downtime.

For our crane servicing and maintenance contract customers, breakdown cover comes with a call-out service and a 2-hour response target, because we appreciate the impact a stopped crane has on your business. After any significant repair, the crane is tested and, where required, re-examined before it lifts again, so it can return to work in the knowledge it’s safe rather than merely running.

Our crane repair service covers:

  • Hoist, brake and gearbox failures
  • Electrical faults, controls, limits and radio systems
  • Chain and wire rope replacement
  • Structural and runway damage
  • All makes, including obsolete and orphaned cranes
  • Testing and re-certification after repair

Crane Down? Get An Engineer Moving

Call with the crane's symptoms and location, and we will get an engineer to you, with a 2-hour response target for maintenance contract customers.

Our Crane Breakdown & Repair Services

Breakdown Response

When a crane stops, the first job is information, including what happened, what the crane was doing, and what the symptoms are now.

That call shapes what the engineer brings, and it’s often the difference between a first-visit fix and a second trip for parts. Customers on our crane maintenance contracts have the added advantage that we already have the machine’s history, so the diagnosis often starts before the van does.

For contract customers, the call-out service carries a 2-hour response target. The attending engineer makes the crane safe first, diagnoses the failure, and either completes the repair on the spot or gives you a straight answer on parts, cost and time, so you can plan around the outage rather than wonder about it.

What We Repair

Most crane failures cluster around a familiar set:

  • hoist motors and gearboxes
  • brakes that no longer hold or release cleanly
  • contactors and control faults
  • limit switches
  • festoon and radio systems
  • wire ropes or chains reaching the end of their life.

We repair all of them, across overhead travelling cranes, gantries, semi-gantries and swing jibs of any manufacture.

Beyond the electrical and mechanical, we handle the damage that shock loads and collisions leave in the steel, from bent end carriages to runway misalignment, with our group’s fabrication capability behind any structural repair. Where a failure has a story behind it, we tell you what caused it, because a repair that ignores the cause is just a deposit on the next breakdown.

Crane Repair Company

Obsolete & Orphaned Cranes

Plenty of sound cranes outlive their manufacturers, and their owners are then told the machine is unsupportable. It usually is not. Our engineers repair cranes whose makers have long since gone, sourcing compatible parts from the market, re-engineering assemblies where no compatible parts exist, and upgrading obsolete controls to current equivalents that improve the crane rather than merely reviving it.

The honest limit is economics rather than possibility, and we will tell you when a repair bill is buying less than it costs. At that point, the conversation becomes modernisation or replacement through our crane manufacture and installation service, with the numbers for each side by side.

Testing & Certification After Repair

A repaired crane is not a working crane until it has been proven. After any repair that could affect the crane’s safety, the machine is functionally tested, proof load tested where the repair demands it, and put in front of a competent person for thorough examination before it returns to service, in line with the duties covered by our LOLER inspections.

The repair, the parts fitted and the testing are all documented into the crane’s history, so the machine comes back not just running but certified, and its records show an unbroken story when the next examination or audit reads them.

Our Process

From Breakdown Call To Certified Return

  1. 01

    Take The Call

You tell us the crane, the symptoms and the site. The engineer leaves with the right parts because the diagnosis starts on the phone.

  2. 02

    Make Safe & Diagnose

The crane is made safe first, then the failure is diagnosed properly, cause included, not just the component that gave up.

  3. 03

    Repair & Prove

The repair is completed on site wherever the fault allows, followed by functional and load testing where the work demands it.

  4. 04

    Document & Return

Parts, work and testing are recorded into the crane's history, and the machine returns to service certified.

Why Choose SWL

Repairs Measured in Hours, Not Excuses

2-Hour Response on Contract

Maintenance contract customers get a call out service with a 2-hour response target when a crane stops.

Any Make, Any Age

Current models to orphaned machines, one team repairs them all, sourcing parts across the whole market.

Cause, Not Just Component

We repair what failed and tell you why it failed, so the same fault does not book a return visit.

Structural Capability

Bent steel, damaged carriages and runway problems are repaired with our group's fabrication strength behind them.

Certified Back To Work

Testing and thorough examination after repair mean the crane returns compliant, not just running.

History That Helps

For contract customers, the attending engineer already knows the crane, which shortens every diagnosis.

Our Crane Repair FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you attend a crane breakdown?

For maintenance contract customers, we operate a call-out service with a 2-hour response target. For non-contract customers, we attend as fast as engineer availability allows, prioritised by how badly the stoppage is hurting.

Do you repair cranes from any manufacturer?

Yes. We repair all types and manufacturers of cranes and powered lifting equipment, including obsolete machines whose makers no longer exist, sourcing or re-engineering parts as the repair requires.

Can crane repairs be done on site?

Most can. Diagnosis always happens on site, and the majority of electrical, mechanical and rope or chain repairs are completed there, with workshop support behind anything that needs fabrication or machining.

What are the most common crane failures?

Hoist motor and gearbox faults, brake wear and adjustment, contactor and control failures, limit switch problems, festoon and radio faults, and wire ropes or chains reaching the end of their serviceable life.

Does a repaired crane need re-testing?

After any repair that could affect its safety, yes. The crane is functionally tested, proof-load tested where the repair demands it, and thoroughly examined before returning to service, with everything documented in its history.

When is repair no longer worth it?

When the money spent stops coming back. We give you the repair cost against the modernisation and replacement numbers honestly, and the decision stays yours.

Which areas do you cover?

Our engineers repair cranes across the United Kingdom, on single machines and multi-site fleets.
