Marine Safety Equipment Servicing

Emergency Equipment That Works On The Day It's Needed

Marine LSA work keeps emergency equipment ready for use, protecting crew and passengers at sea. At SWL, we inspect, service, test, and repair the full life-saving inventory aboard, from lifeboats and rescue boats to the davits, winches, and release gear that launch them, along with liferafts, lifejackets, immersion suits, and lifebuoys.

Every job supports SOLAS, IMO, flag-state and manufacturer requirements, with servicing planned around vessel schedules to keep equipment ready and disruption to a minimum. The reports, records and certification we issue are backed by manufacturer, flag and class approvals, so they stand up to any vessel inspection.

Our LSA services cover:

  • Inspection and servicing of life-saving equipment
  • Lifeboats and rescue boats
  • Launching and recovery equipment, including davits and winches
  • Liferafts and personal safety equipment
  • Testing and repairs
  • Compliance support, service records and planned maintenance

Is Your LSA Servicing Due?

Tell us what is aboard and when the vessel is next alongside, and we will plan the servicing around her schedule.

Our Life-Saving Appliance Services

Inspection & Servicing

Life-saving equipment spends most of its life unused, which is exactly why it needs routine checks and maintenance to stay in working order. We inspect and service the full LSA inventory aboard, working to the manufacturer’s schedules and the vessel’s flag-state requirements rather than a generic checklist.

We plan servicing around the vessel’s schedule, so readiness is maintained without operations stopping to accommodate it. We coordinate attendance with port calls, lay-ups and yard periods, and track due dates across the equipment so nothing aboard quietly falls out of date.

Lifeboat & Rescue Boat Servicing

We carry out examinations, servicing, repairs and operational testing on lifeboats and rescue boats. We run the boat through what it would actually have to do rather than looking it over at rest, with engines started and run, steering and controls tested, and the hull and structure examined for damage and deterioration.

We check onboard equipment against the vessel’s required inventory, and report anything we find with a clear recommendation for repair or replacement. Our own engineers carry out the repairs, so the boat returns to service without a second contractor becoming involved.

Lifeboat & Rescue Boat Servicing

Launching & Recovery Equipment

A serviceable boat is no use on a seized davit, so launching and recovery equipment gets the same attention as the boats it carries. We maintain davits, winches, release mechanisms, and associated components, inspecting wires, sheaves, brakes, gearing, limit switches, hooks, and release gear to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.

As an approved service station for Global Davit and Davit International, we work under the maker’s own authority on their equipment. When a davit system needs proving under load, our waterbag load testing service applies controlled incremental loading aboard without craning solid weights onto the deck.

Liferafts & Personal Safety Equipment

We service or replace liferafts, lifejackets, immersion suits and lifebuoys, the personal safety equipment crew and passengers depend on once they leave the vessel. Lifejacket cylinders and firing heads are checked and changed where needed, immersion suits are examined for seam integrity and closure condition, and lifebuoys are checked along with their lights and lines.

When equipment reaches the end of its service life, we say so and supply a replacement rather than servicing something that should be condemned. Covering it alongside the boats and davits means one attendance covers the vessel’s entire life-saving inventory.

Testing & Repairs

We check equipment performance, identify faults, and replace worn components at every attendance, because the fault that matters is the one found before an emergency, not during it. That might be a release hook that no longer resets cleanly, a winch brake that slips under load or a boat engine that struggles to start.

Our own engineers carry out the repairs and retest the equipment afterwards, so it returns to service proven rather than assumed. We also record every fault, repair, and replacement against the equipment, giving you a clear history when the next inspection comes round.

Rescue Boat Servicing and Repair

Compliance, Approvals & Documentation

Our LSA work supports applicable SOLAS, IMO, flag-state and manufacturer requirements. We are an approved service station for Fassmer, Hatecke, Global Davit, and Davit International; a Bahamas Maritime Authority-authorised service provider; and a Lloyds, RINA, and DNV-approved service provider, so the work is recognised by the people who inspect it.

Every attendance produces clear reports, maintenance records, and the relevant certification to support vessel inspections, itemised by equipment and its position aboard. If the vessel’s lifting equipment is due at the same time, our Marine LOLER 2006 inspections can be completed during the same attendance.

Our Process

From Port Call To Certificate

  1. 01

    Plan Around The Vessel

Tell us what is aboard and where it'll be. Servicing is scheduled against port calls, lay-ups and yard periods.

  2. 02

    Inspect & Service

Lifeboats, rescue boats, davits and personal safety equipment are inspected and serviced to the manufacturer's schedules.

  3. 03

    Test & Repair

Performance is checked, faults are identified and worn components replaced, with equipment retested before it returns to service.

  4. 04

    Certify And Schedule

Reports, records and certification are issued, with next due dates tracked so nothing aboard quietly falls out of date.

Why Choose SWL

Approvals That Are Accepted Where It Counts

Manufacturer Approved

An approved service station for Fassmer, Hatecke, Global Davit and Davit International, so the work is done under the maker's own authority.

Boats & Davits Together

The boat and the gear that launches it are serviced by one team in one attendance, because a sound boat on a seized davit saves nobody.

Flag & Class Recognised

Bahamas Maritime Authority authorised and approved by Lloyds, RINA and DNV, so our certification stands where it is presented.

Southampton Facility

A servicing facility on the south coast plus engineers who travel, so equipment can come to us or we come to the vessel.

Planned Around Your Schedule

Servicing coordinated with port calls, lay-ups and yard periods, so readiness is maintained without disrupting operations.

Records Built For Inspection

Reports and certification itemised against the equipment aboard, ready for flag, class and port state without a scramble.

Our LSA Servicing FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What does lifeboat servicing involve?

Examination, servicing, repair and operational testing. The boat is run rather than looked over, so engines are started, steering and controls are worked, hull and structure are examined for damage and deterioration, and the on-board equipment is checked against the inventory the vessel has to carry.

How often do lifeboats and davits need servicing?

SOLAS, the manufacturer’s schedule, and the vessel’s flag-state requirements set the intervals, with additional attention needed after damage, repair, or any event affecting the equipment. We work to the schedule that applies to your vessel.

Which manufacturers are you approved for?

We are an approved service station for Fassmer, Hatecke, Global Davit and Davit International, so work on that equipment is carried out under the manufacturer’s own authority and to their schedules.

Do you service the davits as well as the boats?

Yes, and we would always recommend doing both together. We maintain davits, winches, release mechanisms, and the surrounding components at the same time as the boat, because a serviceable boat on a seized davit is of no use to anyone.

Can you prove a davit system under load?

Yes. When a system needs testing rather than examination, our waterbag load testing service applies controlled, incremental loading aboard, avoiding the need to crane solid test weights onto the deck. We can also provide other forms of proof load testing where required too.

Do you service liferafts and lifejackets?

We service or replace liferafts, lifejackets, immersion suits, and lifebuoys, including cylinder and firing head checks, immersion suit seam and closure examinations, and lifebuoy lights and lines checked against the vessel’s required carriage.

Are you recognised by flag and class?

Yes. We are a Bahamas Maritime Authority-authorised service provider and hold approvals from Lloyds, RINA and DNV, so the certification we issue is accepted at flag inspection, class survey and charterer’s audit.

Can you work aboard, or does equipment come to you?

Both. Our engineers work aboard vessels across the United Kingdom, and equipment better handled ashore comes to our Southampton facility.

Can LSA servicing run alongside our Marine LOLER examinations?

Yes, and it usually should. Scheduling both into one attendance saves a second visit and keeps the vessel’s due dates aligned.
