Non-Destructive Testing Specialists

Know What Is Hidden Inside Your Welds & Materials

Non-destructive testing is a family of inspection methods that measure and evaluate materials and components without causing damage, so the equipment remains in service after the test. It reveals what the eye cannot, including cracks on and below the surface, porosity and inclusions, lack of fusion or penetration in welds, corrosion and wall thinning, delamination in composites, and voids and discontinuities that can lead to failure if nobody finds them first.

At SWL, we use NDT to keep equipment and structures safe, reliable and compliant, catching defects before failure occurs, supporting preventive maintenance and quality control, and providing the evidence that regulators and industry standards demand. Where a fault does need investigating to destruction, the same team runs our tensile and destructive testing service, so the two sides of the picture come from one supplier.

Our NDT and weld testing covers:

  • Weld inspection during fabrication and in service
  • Magnetic particle inspection for surface and near surface cracks
  • Dye penetrant testing for surface breaking defects
  • Ultrasonic testing for internal flaws, including phased array and TOFD
  • Radiographic and eddy current methods where the job demands them
  • Corrosion monitoring, thickness measurement and failure investigation

Need A Weld or Component Inspected?

Our NDT engineers test on your site or at our facility, and the equipment goes straight back into service once it passes.

Non-Destructive Testing Methods We Use

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)

Magnetic particle inspection detects surface and near surface cracks in ferromagnetic materials such as steel and iron. The component is magnetised and fine magnetic particles are applied, and any crack disturbs the magnetic field and draws the particles into a visible line along the defect.

MPI testing is fast, sensitive and ideally suited to welds, lifting equipment, shafts, hooks and fabricated steelwork, which is why it is one of the most requested inspections we carry out. It reveals the tight, closed cracks that a visual check would never see, at the stage where the fix is a repair rather than a replacement.

Dye Penetrant Testing

Dye penetrant testing reveals surface breaking defects in almost any non-porous material, including stainless steels and non-ferrous metals that magnetic methods cannot inspect. A coloured or fluorescent dye is drawn into any crack open to the surface, the excess is removed, and a developer pulls the trapped dye back out into a clear, visible indication.

It’s a simple method with an exacting technique behind it, and when done properly, it finds hairline cracks, laps, porosity, and fatigue damage in welds, castings, and machined components. We use it wherever the material or the geometry rules out MPI, and often alongside it to build a complete surface picture.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Ultrasonic testing sends high frequency sound waves through a material and reads the echoes, which makes it the method for finding what lies beneath the surface. This includes finding internal flaws, lack of fusion deep in a weld, laminations in plate, and wall thinning from corrosion that no surface inspection can measure.

Beyond conventional UT, advanced techniques take the method further. Phased array ultrasonic testing builds a detailed image of a weld or structure from multiple angled beams, and time of flight diffraction sizes cracks with real precision, which matters when an engineer has to decide whether a flaw is acceptable or the component comes out of service. Together they give you a defensible answer, not an estimate.

Visual, Radiographic & Eddy Current Testing

Every inspection starts with visual testing, direct or remote, using cameras and borescopes to reach the places an engineer cannot. Where the job calls for it, radiographic testing uses X-rays or gamma rays to reveal internal defects in a permanent image, and eddy current testing applies an electromagnetic field to find surface and near surface defects quickly across large areas.

The right method depends on the material, the geometry, the defect you are worried about and the standard the work answers to, and it is rarely just one. We select and combine methods to suit the component in front of us, and we will tell you plainly which inspections your equipment needs and which it does not.

Where NDT Is Used

Weld inspection is the heart of the work, both during fabrication and in service, and the same methods protect pressure vessels, pipelines, and structural steel, and serve the aerospace, marine, automotive, and energy sectors. Lifting equipment is a constant thread, because NDT supports the thorough examinations carried out under our LOLER inspection service, confirming what the competent person suspects and clearing what they cannot see.

NDT also underpins corrosion monitoring and thickness measurement programmes, and it is the first tool out of the box in a failure investigation, establishing how a component cracked and whether its neighbours are heading the same way. If equipment is important enough that its failure would be harmful, it is a candidate for NDT.

Our Process

From Enquiry To Clear Result

  1. 01

    Define The Inspection

Tell us the component, the material and the concern. We will select the NDT methods that will actually answer the question.

  2. 02

    Inspect Without Damage

Our engineers test on your site or at our facility, using the method matched to the defect, from MPI and dye penetrant to ultrasonic imaging.

  3. 03

    Evaluate The Findings

Indications are assessed against the relevant standard, so you know whether a flaw is acceptable, repairable or cause to withdraw the item.

  4. 04

    Report & Return

You receive a full inspection report, and because nothing was damaged, cleared equipment goes straight back to work.

Why Choose SWL

One Team For The Whole Testing Picture

The Full Method Set

Visual, MPI, dye penetrant, ultrasonic, phased array, TOFD, radiographic and eddy current, selected to suit the component rather than the other way round.

Welds Are Our Trade

We inspect welds every working day, in fabrication and in service, so indications are read by people who know what a weld should look like inside.

In Service Means In Service

Non-destructive means your equipment is tested and back at work, not stripped, sacrificed or waiting on a replacement.

Destructive Testing on Hand

When a flaw needs investigating to failure, our own rigs take over, so the whole investigation stays under one roof.

Standards & Certification

Findings are evaluated and reported against the relevant standard, giving you evidence that satisfies auditors, insurers and regulators.

Nationwide Response

Our engineers inspect across the United Kingdom, on your site or at our facility, scheduled around your operations.

Our NDT & Weld Testing FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is non-destructive testing?

NDT is a group of testing methods used to inspect, measure and evaluate materials and components without causing damage, so the equipment remains in service after testing. It detects defects such as cracks, corrosion, voids and weld flaws before they lead to failure.

What can NDT detect?

Surface and internal cracks, porosity and inclusions, lack of fusion or penetration in welds, corrosion and wall thinning, delamination in composites, and voids, leaks and structural discontinuities.

Which NDT method is best for weld testing?

It depends on the weld and the defect in question. MPI and dye penetrant find surface-breaking flaws, while ultrasonic methods, including phased array and TOFD, reveal and size what lies inside the weld. Most weld inspections combine methods, and we advise the right set for each job.

What is MPI testing?

Magnetic particle inspection magnetises a ferromagnetic component and applies fine particles that gather visibly along any surface or near surface crack. It is fast, sensitive and widely used on welds, lifting equipment and fabricated steel.

What is dye penetrant testing?

A dye is drawn into any defect open to the surface, and a developer then pulls it back out into a clear, visible indication. It works on almost any non-porous material, including stainless and non-ferrous metals that magnetic methods cannot inspect.

Does NDT take my equipment out of service?

Only for the inspection itself. Because the methods cause no damage, equipment that passes goes straight back to work, which is precisely why NDT underpins preventive maintenance programmes.

Is NDT required for LOLER compliance?

NDT frequently supports the thorough examination of lifting equipment, confirming or clearing suspected defects that a visual examination cannot resolve. Our engineers run it alongside our LOLER inspection service where it is needed.

Can you carry out NDT on site?

Yes. Most methods travel, and our engineers inspect welds, structures and equipment on sites across the United Kingdom, with facility based inspection available where that suits the component better.
