Lifting Compliance for Superyachts

Everything That Lifts Aboard, Proven To the Standard the Vessel Deserves

Any equipment used to lift, lower, launch, recover or move loads onboard falls under the lifting regulations, and that means the tender cranes, passerelles, davits, garage winches, mast and rigging lifting points and engine room lifting systems all need thorough examination and, where required, load testing by a competent person.

At SWL, we examine and test superyacht lifting equipment aboard, in marinas and yards, and during refit, working discreetly around the vessel’s programme, guests, and crew. The examinations run under the marine lifting regime covered by our Marine LOLER 2006 inspections, with every appliance and accessory certified and the vessel’s lifting register kept complete, because a flag survey or an insurer’s question deserves an answer from the file, not a search of the lazarette.

Superyacht lifting equipment we cover:

  • Tender cranes, slewing, telescopic and knuckle boom
  • Davits for jet skis, rescue tenders and small craft
  • Passerelles and gangways, extendable, rotating and hydraulic
  • Garage overhead gantries, sliding beam cranes and winches
  • Engine room gantry cranes, chain hoists, padeyes and lifting tables
  • Mast and rigging lifting points on sailing superyachts

Is Your Vessel's Lifting Register Up To Date?

Our engineers examine and test superyacht lifting equipment in marinas, yards and on refit, scheduled around the vessel's programme.

Tender & Toy Handling

Tender handling gear works hard but also fails expensively. Slewing, telescopic, and knuckle-boom tender cranes, davits for jet skis, rescue tenders and small craft, garage overhead gantries, and the sliding-beam cranes integrated into tender garages all carry loads over water, over decks, and occasionally over guests, and each needs thorough examination at the intervals set by the regulations.

Our team examine the full handling system, crane, wires, hooks, slings and the strops and accessories that ride with them, and proves capacity under load (usually via water bag testing) where the examination or the vessel’s history demands it, using methods that suit a marina berth as readily as a yard.

Passerelles & Boarding Equipment

A passerelle is a retractable, hydraulic gangway used for boarding and disembarking a superyacht. Acting as a luxury “front porch”, it bridges the gap between the vessel’s deck and the dock and typically adjusts to accommodate changing tides.

During the examination, we check for the following:

  • Structural Integrity: Checking for bending, cracks, or excessive twisting under load.
  • Moving Parts: Inspecting hydraulic rams, hinges, and swivels for smooth operation and greasing moving parts.
  • Safety Features: Ensuring non-slip surfaces are intact and that stanchions/handrails fit tightly.

Testing of superyacht passerelles (gangways and accommodation ladders) should be carried out annually and as part of the 5-year load tests required by Class and Flag State authorities for any lifting or means-of-access appliances. Testing also needs to be carried out Post-Repair or Modification (i.e. after any repairs to the hydraulic systems, structural welding, or major parts replacement).

Engine Room & Technical Lifting

Below decks, the lifting is less glamorous and just as regulated. Engine room gantry cranes, chain hoists and beam trolleys, padeyes and lifting points, hydraulic lifting tables and the general loose lifting equipment that lives in the engine room all require examination, and padeyes in particular are easily forgotten until a survey asks when they were last proven.

We examine and test the technical lifting inventory through the same visit as the deck equipment, proving padeyes and lifting points under load where required, and consolidating everything into one register so the chief engineer holds a single, complete picture.

Mast & Rigging Lifting on Sailing Yachts

Sailing superyachts add their own lifting inventory, including mast stepping cranes in the yard or onboard, boom and rigging lifting points, and the winches used for controlled lifting during rigging operations. These loads are large, the geometry is unforgiving, and the equipment often works hardest exactly when the rig is at its most vulnerable, during stepping, tuning and survey.

We examine and test rigging lifting points and winches against their duties, and where new wires, strops or slings are needed, our group supplies and tests them, including the Dyneema slings, tested and certified before they go aloft.

Our Process

Fitted To The Vessel's Programme

  1. 01

    Plan Around The Vessel

Examinations are scheduled against the vessel's programme, in marina, yard or refit, with crew and guest routines respected.

  2. 02

    Examine The Inventory

Every lifting appliance and accessory aboard is examined, from tender cranes and passerelles to padeyes and loose gear.

  3. 03

    Test Under Load

Capacity is proven where the examination demands it, with methods chosen to suit a berth as readily as a dry dock.

  4. 04

    Certify The Register

Every item is certified and the vessel's lifting register completed, ready for flag surveys, insurers and charter questions.

Our Superyacht Lifting FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as lifting equipment on a superyacht?

Any equipment used to lift, lower, launch, recover or move loads onboard. This includes tender cranes, davits, passerelles, garage winches and gantries, mast and rigging lifting points, engine room cranes and hoists, padeyes and all the loose lifting gear that works with them.

Do passerelles need examination?

Yes. A passerelle is lifting equipment that carries people, and its structure, hydraulics and controls all fall within the examination. We examine and load-test passerelles and gangways aboard.

How often does yacht lifting equipment need examining?

Under the marine lifting regime, equipment and accessories used for lifting people are inspected at least every 6 months, and all other lifting equipment is inspected at least every 12 months, with re-examination after any event that could affect safety.

Can you attend the vessel in a marina?

Yes. We examine and test in marinas, yards and during refit, and our load testing methods are chosen to work at a berth as readily as in dry dock.

Do you test padeyes and lifting points?

Yes, and they are the items most often missed. Engine room and deck padeyes are proven under load where required and consolidated into the vessel’s lifting register with everything else.

Can you supply slings and rigging as well as test them?

Yes. Our group supplies wires, strops, and Dyneema slings, which are tested and certified before delivery, alongside the examination work.

Where do you operate?

Across the United Kingdom’s marinas, yards and refit facilities, with riding teams available to travel with vessels further afield.
