Water Bag Load Testing Services

Crane, Davit & Lifeboat Systems Proven With Water, Not Iron

We proof load cranes, davits, lifting beams and gangways using water filled bags, building the load in controlled increments wherever solid weights cannot go.

Proof Load Testing With Water Bags

Controlled Load Testing for Cranes, Davits & Lifting Appliances

Water bag testing is proof load testing done with water-filled bags instead of solid weights. Empty bags are rigged to the lifting point, water is pumped in gradually to raise the load in controlled increments, and the load is monitored through calibrated load cells or flow meters and held for a set duration to confirm the appliance is stable and sound. When the test is complete, the water drains away, and the bags pack down to a fraction of their applied weight.

That combination of gradual loading and easy transport is what makes the method safer than solid weights and ideally suited to the places iron cannot sensibly go (ships, offshore platforms, confined plant rooms and high-level lifting beams). We use it to prove the safe working load of cranes, davits, lifting beams, gangways, lifeboat systems and other lifting appliances across the UK, with every test measured, recorded and certified.

Our water bag load testing covers:

  • Marine cranes, davits and lifeboat launching systems
  • Overhead cranes, hoists and lifting beams in industrial settings
  • Gangways, gantries and construction lifting beams
  • Offshore platforms, shipyards and dry docks
  • Theatre rigging and stage lifting systems
  • Calibrated load measurement and certification on every test

Need A Crane or Davit Load Tested?

Our engineers bring the water bags, pumps and calibrated load cells to your site or vessel. Wherever you are in the United Kingdom, we prove the appliance to its safe working load in controlled increments.

Water Bag Testing of Lifting Appliances

How Water Bag Testing Works

The empty water bags are attached to the lifting point, and water is pumped in gradually, raising the load in controlled increments rather than dropping the full test weight in one hit. The load is monitored throughout using calibrated load cells or flow meters, then held for a specified duration to confirm the stability and integrity of the appliance under full test load.

Once the hold is complete and the readings taken, the water is drained, and the bags come away light and easy to handle. The gradual build is the safety advantage over solid weights because, if anything begins to move, deflect, or misbehave, the loading stops immediately, with only part of the test load applied.

Waterbag Testing

What The Test Proves

A water bag test examines the whole load path, not just the hook. It proves the structural integrity of the lifting points, the mechanical performance of the crane, davit, winch or hoist under load, and the behaviour of brakes and clutches when they are asked to hold and control a genuine test load. Wire ropes, sheaves, and hooks are monitored under stress, and the foundations and mounting points indicate whether they carry the reaction as intended by the design.

For beams and platforms, deflection and stability are measured against the figures the design allows. The result is a complete picture of how the appliance behaves at test load, recorded against calibrated readings, which is exactly the evidence a surveyor, insurer or LOLER thorough examination needs behind it.

Davit & Lifeboat System Testing

Davit testing is where water bags earn their reputation. A davit or lifeboat launching system must be proven under load, but craning solid test weights aboard a vessel is slow, expensive and often simply impossible. Water bags travel empty, rig quickly, and draw their load from the sea or a dockside supply, which makes them the standard method for davits, rescue boat systems and lifeboat launching gear.

We test davit and lifeboat systems on vessels, in shipyards and dry docks, and on offshore platforms, holding the proof load for the required duration and certifying the result. Where the same vessel needs its wider lifting appliances examined, the work runs alongside our Marine LOLER 2006 inspections, so one visit covers the fleet’s obligations.

Where Water Bag Testing Is Used

The method suits any environment where solid weights are impractical or unsafe to bring in. Marine cranes and davits are the classic case, along with offshore platforms, shipyards and dry docks, but the same advantages apply ashore to overhead cranes and hoists in industrial settings, construction lifting beams and gantries, and even theatre rigging and stage lifting systems, where the load must be applied gently above an auditorium floor.

However, there are practical limits worth knowing about. Water bag testing needs a water source and pumping equipment on site, it does not suit environments where water discharge is restricted, and the rigging and load monitoring call for trained personnel.

We assess all of that when we scope the job, and where water bags are not the right tool, our proof load testing service covers calibrated weights and hydraulic methods instead.

Waterbag Proof Load Testing

Our Process

From Rigging To Certificate

  1. 01

    Scope The Appliance

Tell us what needs proving, its safe working load and where it lives. We will then confirm the test load, the bag configuration and the water supply.

  2. 02

    Rig & Fill

The bags are rigged to the lifting point and filled in controlled increments, with the load monitored through calibrated cells throughout.

  3. 03

    Hold & Measure

The full test load is held for the specified duration while stability, deflection and mechanical performance are checked.

  4. 04

    Drain & Certify

The water is drained, the bags come away, and certification is issued recording the load applied and the result.

Why Choose SWL

Load Testing Where Solid Weights Cannot Go

Safer By Design

The load builds gradually under control, so any problem shows itself at partial load rather than under the full test weight.

Marine Specialists

Davits, lifeboat systems and ships' cranes are daily work for our engineers, on vessels, in yards and offshore.

Calibrated Measurement

Loads are monitored through calibrated load cells and flow meters, so the certificate records a measured figure, not an estimate.

Large Loads, Light Kit

Empty bags travel light and rig fast, which makes high capacity tests cost effective in places iron weights could never reach.

The Whole Load Path

Structure, mechanics, brakes, ropes and foundations are all proven together, the way the appliance actually works.

One Testing House

Water bags, calibrated weights, hydraulics and in-house rigs all sit within one team, so you always get the right method for the job.

Our Water Bag Testing FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is water bag testing?

It’s proof load testing carried out with water filled bags instead of solid weights. The bags are rigged to the lifting point and filled gradually, applying the test load in controlled increments while calibrated load cells monitor the figure.

Why use water bags instead of solid test weights?

The load builds gradually, which is safer, the empty bags are light to transport, the water gives precise load control, and high capacity tests become cost effective in confined spaces and marine environments where solid weights are impractical.

What equipment can be tested with water bags?

Cranes, davits, winches, hoists, lifting beams, gangways, gantries and lifeboat launching systems, ashore and afloat. If it lifts and it has a safe working load to prove, water bags will usually reach it.

How is the load measured during the test?

Through calibrated load cells or flow meters, monitored as the bags fill and throughout the hold period, so the certificate records an accurate measured load.

Are there situations where water bag testing is not suitable?

It needs a water source and pumping equipment, and it is not suited to sites where water discharge is restricted. Where that rules it out, we test with calibrated weights or hydraulic methods through our proof load testing service instead.

Do you test lifeboat and davit systems?

Yes, it is one of the most common uses of the method. We prove davits, rescue boat systems and lifeboat launching gear on vessels, in shipyards and dry docks, and on offshore platforms, with certification issued for each system.

Which areas do you cover?

Our engineers carry out water bag load testing across the United Kingdom, on industrial sites, in shipyards and ports, and aboard vessels.
